The Perils of Project 2025: A Threat to Michigan's Progress

Project 2025, an initiative proposed by former Trump administration officials, poses significant threats to the hard-won gains Michiganders have achieved in recent years. From abortion access and workers' rights to strong unions and LGBTQ protections, this project endangers the very fabric of our progress. Authored by key figures deeply tied to the Trump administration, Project 2025 seeks to reverse the strides we have made toward a fairer and more equitable society.
Project 2025 isn't just any policy proposal; it's the brainchild of individuals closely associated with Donald Trump's presidency. These officials are intent on implementing regressive policies that reflect the former administration's agenda, disregarding the advancements made during the subsequent years.
Trump and his allies are planning a massive expansion of presidential power, aiming to restructure the government and concentrate authority in Trump's hands. This plan includes empowering Trump to fire and replace independent civil servants with extreme MAGA loyalists, turning specialized government employees into political agents pushing an extremist agenda. These loyalty tests would extend to national security personnel and beyond. Trump also seeks to restore the power of “impoundment,” allowing him to unilaterally withhold congressionally appropriated funds. Additionally, Trump plans to bring historically independent agencies, including the Department of Justice, directly under his control, using law enforcement to punish his enemies and protect his allies. This is nothing short of an authoritarian takeover.
One of the most alarming aspects of Project 2025 is its proposed tax policy. The plan aims to raise taxes on working-class and middle-class families while providing substantial tax cuts for the wealthy. This shift in the tax burden would make economic inequality much worse than it is currenty, making it harder for average Michiganders to make ends meet and further enriching the already affluent. Under the plan, the typical family of four in Michigan would see a tax increase of $2,797 per year, while 45,000 households in America reporting more than $10 million in income would each see an average annual tax cut of $1.5 million.
Michigan's history is steeped in labor movements and the fight for workers' rights. Our state has been a beacon for union strength, advocating for fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable hours. Project 2025 seeks to undermine these efforts by attacking unions and eroding workers' rights. The initiative proposes ending overtime pay, leaving workers vulnerable to exploitation and reducing their hard-earned income.
In Michigan, we have fought tirelessly to protect reproductive rights, ensuring that women have access to safe and legal abortion services. Project 2025 threatens to annihilate these protections, rolling back the clock on women's rights and autonomy over their own bodies. The proposal aims to impose draconian restrictions, making it nearly impossible for women to access essential healthcare services. This is not just an attack on abortion access; it’s an attack on the fundamental right of women to control their own bodies.

Moreover, Project 2025 proposes ending no-fault divorce, forcing women to remain in potentially abusive or unhappy marriages. It seeks to ban birth control, stripping women of their right to make personal decisions about their reproductive health. The plan also includes criminalizing the shipping of abortion medication, creating significant barriers for women seeking to terminate pregnancies safely. Additionally, Project 2025 envisions building a surveillance state to track women and healthcare providers, using the federal government to crack down on reproductive freedom nationwide. These policies represent an all-out war on women's rights and freedoms.
Project 2025's assault on education is multifaceted and deeply concerning. The initiative proposes eliminating the Department of Education, which houses the Office of Civil Rights, threatening educational equity and civil rights enforcement. It also aims to eliminate the Head Start Program, crucial for providing early education to low-income children. Additionally, Project 2025 seeks to jail educators over banned books and arm teachers, increasing the risk of violence and undermining the learning environment in our schools.
Michigan has made significant strides in ensuring equal rights for LGBTQ individuals, including marriage equality and protection against discrimination. Project 2025 poses a direct threat to these gains. The proposal seeks to undo all existing LGBTQ protections, putting the community at risk of discrimination and stripping away the rights that have been fought for over decades.
Project 2025 plans to cut Social Security benefits by raising the retirement age for about 71% of Michigan residents, affecting 7,173,779 people. This proposal, similar to recent Republican Study Committee budget plans, suggests increasing the Social Security retirement age from 67 to 69. As a result, benefits would be reduced by $4,100 to $8,900 in the first year alone, depending on when someone starts claiming Social Security. Over ten years, a retiree earning a median wage could lose between $46,000 and $100,000.
Project 2025 plans to put "limits or lifetime caps on Medicaid benefits." This would put 429,800 low-income Medicaid enrollees in Michigan at risk of losing their coverage because they can't afford other options.

Additionally, the plan would raise prescription drug costs for up to 672,860 people in Michigan by removing limits on out-of-pocket Medicare drug costs. It also prevents the government from negotiating lower drug prices.

As Michiganders, we must remain vigilant and united against the regressive policies proposed in Project 2025. All of our progress is at stake. This initiative, authored by individuals with deep ties to the Trump administration, threatens to undo the progress we've made and undermine the values we hold dear.

It's imperative that we raise our voices, advocate for our rights, and protect the advancements that make Michigan a great place to live and work. Together, we can ensure that our state continues to move forward, not backward.

But if you don't want to take our word for it, go ahead and read the 920 page document for yourself. You should know what you are going to get if you do not vote against Trump and his horrible plan. Read it HERE.
